"What else could you do?" - John David, Master Mason Emeritus
John David was an apprentice mason at the time of the fire of 1984. 40 years later, he is our longest-serving member of staff, still working to conserve a building he helped to repair 40 years ago, filled with irreplaceable treasures he carried to safety on the night of the fire.
Imagine being in John's shoes 40 years ago, awoken in the middle of the night to find the Minster on fire and at risk of burning down altogether.
We are hugely grateful to have John with us this year, and to hear his characteristically matter-of-fact memories of a night that must have been so dramatic, retold as only a true Yorkshireman could.

    Thank you for the guidance included in the sermon. I have had well over 30 spiritual events, the first being at the age of 12 or 13 when water poured out between my arm and school shirt, and the last was on Holy Saturday just past when I saw projected into my 3rd eye my head being crowned with a crystalline gold and and silver crown. In between these events I saw aIcon of Christ Blessing on the ceiling of the tower over the crossing of Canterbury cathedral. Also when Moses appeared to me on Mt Sinai, it was said to me, "You know you should show yourself", and so I did at a weekday Holy Communion at St Matthews in the City, Auckland, NZ. - I have been told my light filled the entire chapel. Just a few of many events. I passed the organist at St Peters Wellington, NZ. She was speaking to an English man who I took to be an commissary from Canterbury talking about me. I did not stop to introduce myself. All religions end when a 3D civilization ascends to its already existing 5D expression or a 4D civilization to its 6D expression - polarity into unity. We are spiritual beings having a temporary physical experience. The number of sectors in all of creation is 250,000 quad trillion - each having 13 universes so the number of universes is 250,000 quad trillion x 13. When extraordinary events are about to happen, do not attach any judgement to them because if you do you are saying the illusion is real so will stay in the illusion. It is my understanding the ascension of the ready humanity will before the end of this calendar year. Ascension marks the beginning of a new book, not the end of a chapter. I had to be gay and HIV+ to be where I needed to be. And to my many enemies, I have already ascended and I have divine protection and you do not.

    When I was 18 & 19, in 1985, I was visiting family in Yorkshire (from Australia: I emigrated with my parents when I was 3) a few months after the fire, and my uncle was one of the carpenters in the firm tasked with replicating the destroyed beams and rafters of the roof of the transept. He knew I was doing a cabinetmaking apprenticeship in Australia, so asked his boss, Geoff Brayshaw, if I could come to their yard and help with making the new roof. I spent 3 weeks marking and sawing & fitting HUGE joints in framing timbers of 100+ year old oak, made into the new beams, working sometimes to drawings copied from 18th & 19th century restorers' drawings in crayon on boards, discovered in storerooms in adjoining buildings. Either that, or getting extremely sooty measuring and replicating the burnt and shattered beams that could be rescued (what is an apprentice for, after all?). We used modern beam saws and morticers for some, but others, especially at angles, we had to cut like the original makers would have cut them, with hand (electric drill-powered) augers and huge framing slicks (specialised heavy chisels). My feet and inches maths improved in leaps and bounds! (& yes I did carve my initials where no-one will ever see them, probably, unless they look). Unfortunately I couldn't stay for the installation of the trusses that I had a small part in making (I had to get back to Melbourne, making dining chairs and 'French farmhouse'-style refectory tables: chunky in themselves, but delicate in comparison with the 18" x 6" timbers I had been working with) , but I have photos showing the installation process from Uncle Rob and his workmates. A great learning experience.

    I remember that horror like it was yesterday. Even from Texas, I was just gutted at the thought. Then just five years ago the same kind of gut wrenching over Notre Dame where I had performed when I was 17. These incredible, unfathomable, rare works of marvel and mystery giving testament of the magnificence of God are just treasures too great to be lost. I do wish the UK would restore and rebuild the ancient ruins of so many others which fell into ruins over the centuries. They too need to speak again.

    I had the great privilege of attending all the choral evensong services from Saturday 15th June to Friday 21st as well as choral eucharist on the Sunday. The Minster choir never cease to thrill me, thank you Robert for your continuing outstanding leadership. I'm not embarrassed to admit that every time I hear psalm 150 sung as the recessional at the end of the Sunday eucharist it brings tears to my eyes! Thank you so much.

    I remembered about 10 years. Ago visiting York Minster standing next to one of these massive bass pipes! When it sounded you didn’t hear it but you felt the massive pressure wave! I didn’t stay to long as my inside was vibrating! A great sound overall! That’s why they call it the King of Instruments! Fraser❤

  • @elsaarmstrong-zp6ng
    @elsaarmstrong-zp6ng 28 дней назад

    Agree that tempo is about right., many play it far to fast and the audio sound waves crash into each other! Bach’s tocatto and fuch in D minor is just a mash of noise if it’s played too fast! It’s a good test for a hi fi speakers as the frequencies go way down to 16 HZ and harmonics go way up past the human hearing range! I studied audio engineering many years and found it fascinating! If you walk into a church when the organ is playing you walk through the waves and get a pleasant feeling in your ears! It’s the Doppler effect where frequency, amplitude, and phase all sound together ! Try it sometime! The Hammond organ is another example ! Sound straight out of the speakers sound dry! Switch the Leslie speakers and the sound comes alive and spacious! Listen to Procal Harem or bands like Focus they make many interesting sounds from the Doppler effect!🎼 Fraser.😃👂👂

    What happened to the First evensong of Pentecost - a major Feast in the whole Church? It came over as: Oh yes we have to spend some attention to this as well. Was it not more liturgically appropriate to select a date on a weekday in the coming week or so? For the rest I wish Canon Milne all the best and God's blessing in his new position in the Chapter and for all his role as Precentor.(I listen a lot to your online evensongs - at least 2/3 times a week).
